Bock, D. L. Luke. BECNT. Baker, 1994 (2 vols.,
2148 pp.). A monumental treatment of the largest Gospel by one who did
his doctoral work in the area. At over 2000 pages, it serves well as a
comprehensive, well-written, and intelligent reference for extended
study. Much of the size is to be attributed not only to the inclusion of
other scholarly contributions, but as well to the running comparison and
commentary on the “dialogue” among the Gospels. Does not approach Luke
independently, but in a locatable context (including the other Gospels
and the OT). For this Bock is to be praised, and his commentary
commended as a primary source for Lucan study.
Green, J. B. The Gospel of Luke. NICNT. Eerdmans, 1997
(928 pp.). Useful for pastors, students, and scholars alike with a wealth of
bibliographic information. Brief introduction focuses exclusively on reading
Luke and its purpose and theology, revealing the author’s sociological and
narratological hermeneutic. Green shows how biblical narrative works with
its emphasis upon intertextuality. Does not broach the world of Synoptic
comparison. An important work for any consideration of Luke or Luke-Acts.
